July 17 2015£10m visual arts hub within the C-listed Castle Mill Works, Fountainbridge, creating artists’ studios, galleries, teaching space and a wine bar for Edinburgh Printmakers.
More than three times bigger than the arts organisations current base the facility will also play host to a self-contained flat for use by an artist in residence, as well as an art shop and deli.
To facilitate this the architects will carve out a new entrance and viewing window on Dundee Street and create a new build extension which will frame an internal courtyard, whilst also undertaking extensive renovations to the existing industrial building.
Speaking to STV project architect Eilidh Henderson said: “A key aspect being revealed through the careful removal of the external paint, is the polychromatic brickwork façade.
“Internally where possible, the brickwork will be exposed and panelling to the former board room spaces will be retained and re-used.
“An incredible asset of the building that will be revealed through the project however is the vast open plan spaces created by the metal structural frame, with attractive existing column heads being exposed internally.”
The creative hub is scheduled to open in October 2018.
