Hackland + Dore submit plans for 157 Edinburgh homes
Hackland + Dore have submitted plans to erect 157 mixed tenure houses and flats neighbouring Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, on behalf of Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association.

Working to extend the existing urban grid and street pattern the master plan will see a ‘simple urban form’ set within a central landscaped area overseen by HarrisonStevens.

In their design statement the architects said: “The elevations facing the central street are the most urban in character, with homogeneous appearance.

“The proposed use of ordered fenestration with a vertical emphasis reflects the regularity of the tenements in the city. A generous use of juliet balconies is proposed to maximise the south aspect and/or views. Balconies to the corner block further enhance this.

“Stair cores are expressed with larger areas of glazing, with a set back and a different finish (render). A further set back integrates the canopy to the communal entrances.”

Existing overhead pylons on the site are expected to be brought down by the end of the year following installation of an underground cable, opening up expansive views of the Pentland Hills for residents.
