Civic Trust names Notre Dame Primary as Best Scottish project
The Civic Trust has named Notre Dame Primary School, Dowanhill, as the best project in Scotland at the Civic Trust Awards 2014 in a special category supported by the City of Edinburgh Council and Glasgow City Council.

Created by GCC’s project management and design team the £15m project saw extension of the existing C-listed Dowanhill Primary with a terracotta rain screen clad block housing a nursery, assembly-dining-drama hall, library, games hall and conference room, plus kitchen, changing rooms and plant space.

Malcolm Hankey, managing director for the awards, said “Projects are assessed on their architectural excellence, sustainability credentials, accessibility for all users and positive civic contribution. Once again, the judging process has been rigorous and all the winners thoroughly deserve their success.”

A total of 79 projects from 238 applications were credited at the annual bash.

Meanwhile the equally historic Dalmarnock Primary and London Road Primary in the east end have been flattened to make way for wasteland. Why can't Glasgow be ambitious enough to repurpose and renew all of its amazing and historic board schools to this gold standard instead of settling for value engineered PFI/PPP prefab tat?!

Let hope GCC haven't merged too many primary schools to make this new flagship primary and end up with a brand new, award winning, chronically overcrowded school like they have at Hillhead Primary. It would be interesting to know whether that issue was looked at as part of the consideration of overall sustainability.
