Glasgow - Commonwealth City 2014?

October 15 2004

Glasgow has been selected ahead of Edinburgh as Scotland\'s preferred bidder for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It is likely to be the sole British bidder, as no other UK cities have come forward, but can expect competition from South Africa, Nigeria and Canada.
The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland reached their decision after viewing presentations on both cities’ proposals for accommodation, venues, transport, security and the sport programme. The fact that Glasgow has two venue areas within close proximity to a proposed athlete’s village was an advantage. Glasgow has received money from the Scottish Executive and sportscotland to develop a National Indoor Sports Arena and is also creating a regional indoor facility at Toryglen and upgrading Scotstoun Stadium.
