Transformation of Edinburgh’s Craigmillar set to start

December 17 2004

The first stage of £180 million plans to transform the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh into a more desirable place to live has moved a step closer.
The 130-page Craigmillar Urban Design Framework (UDF) document has been submitted to Edinburgh City Council’s Planning Committee for consideration. The document, which was commissioned by the council and Urban Regeneration Company PARC (formerly the Craigmillar Joint Venture Company), gives detailed design guidelines of the 15-year plans.

\"Once approved, the Framework will be adopted by the Council to set the design standards for developments,\" said John Quinn from PARC. \"It\'s an ambitious plan, and one that will make a real difference to everyone who either lives, works in or visits Craigmillar. It will set the ball rolling for more quality homes, a much improved town centre, new schools and community services, better transport facilities, a public park and play spaces.\"

The plans include the creation of 3200 new homes, a 300,000 square foot commercial centre, a new learning campus and four new schools, as well as more facilities for young people, better transport links and more public parks and play areas. It is expected that hundreds of new jobs and apprenticeships will be created as a result of the plans.

The Craigmillar Urban Design Framework will be finalised by the Council\'s Planning Committee early in the New Year. Before then there will be a 10-week statutory consultation period to take on board the views of local people.
