New £19m mental health hospital for Gartnavel

December 17 2004

Macmon Architects is to design a new £19m mental health hospital on the Gartnavel campus for NHS Greater Glasgow. The new private finance funded hospital will replace the two existing 19th century Gartnavel Royal Hospital buildings, and is part of a wider strategy to modernise and improve mental health facilities and services across the city. It is envisaged that the two original buildings, which are both listed, will be converted for residential use as part of the overall redevelopment of the Gartnavel site.

The new hospital will have single rooms for patients, smaller wards, improved clinical and therapeutic areas and better educational facilities. It will provide 117 inpatient beds in 6 separate wards. The hospital’s design is based on a hub and spoke model with administrative, therapy and counselling services based in a two-storey central hub and adult and elderly bed based in single storey wards which extend to form ‘spokes’ on either side of the hub. Courtyard spaces, landscaping, natural light and ventilation will be incorporated into the design to create an attractive environment for patients and staff. Construction work is expected to start in Spring 2005 with the aim of having the new hospital operational by late 2006.
