A council survey has revealed the first rise in derelict land in the city since records began in 1993, with 41% of it in council ownership.

Planners have raised concern that the city is being choked by a “collar of dereliction” as increasing swathes of land are given over to fly tipping to the north and east.

The east end figured highly in the data with Baillieston and Shettleston amongst the areas worst hit.

SNP Councillor David McDonald lambasted a “wasteland of broken promises, littered with disappointment” and stated that run-down sites “attract rats, not investment.”

Glasgow City Council admit a schools closure programme has increased dereliction rates but point to efforts in Possil to develop a community and medical centre on wasteground once occupied by tenements as a statement of intent.
