Aberdeen quarry on the market

Aberdeen quarry on the market
Rubislaw Quarry, reputedly Europe’s deepest man made excavation, has been put up for sale by owners Bixen Ltd as they seek to find owners willing to get themselves in a hole.

A snip at £30k the property resides within Aberdeen’s upmarket West End and comes complete with its own 466ft deep pool.  Potential uses for the historic excavation include a water sports centre or even draining it to provide a climbing wall.

Any purchaser harbouring fanciful notions of large scale subterranean homes or large scale constructions will be thwarted by “binding conditions” which preclude any such grand designs.

Opened in 1740 the former Hill of Rubislaw has provided million of tonnes of granite which served to provide the city with its unique character.

The granite was of such high quality it has been used around the globe from Sebastopol docks on the Black Sea to the terraces of the House of Commons.

Since closure in 1971 the quarry has become the world’s deepest man made lagoon and now poses a flooding risk to neighbouring properties.
