Gareth Hoskins Architects have seen off the competition in securing a £20m commission to redevelop Aberdeen Art Gallery.

The practice will now carry out a design study in a bid to upgrade the facilities and environment of the ageing premises.

Key to these changes will be a reconfiguring of internal spaces and access points and improving facilities for education and research. This may entail demolition of a rear office extension and replacement with a new service area.

Though no funding is currently available it is hoped that production of these plans will stimulate interest from external grant funding bodies. Further impetus is provided by the gallery’s 125th birthday this year.

Hoskins have enjoyed prior success in the field of museum work and are currently gunning for the Fort York Visitor Centre project in Toronto.
