Groundbreaking commences on Vinoly NYPD design
Rafael Vinoly architects have broken ground at their 121st Police Precinct Station House for the New York Police Department.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in attendance to celebrate the occasion which marks the first new Police Precinct on Staten Island for decades, necessitated by rapid population growth and a corresponding demand for expanded law enforcement.

The sustainable design incorporates brownfield land remediation, stormwater management, bio-retention areas and drought resistant landscaping with buildings orientated to optimise energy conservation.

Two distinct buildings respond to the irregular site, a two storey linear bar arcing in plan and increasing in height to symbolically reach out and engage the community and an adjoining single storey pavilion.

Mass is distinguished by varying heights and surface treatments of horizontal stainless steel cladding and grey brick, with a skylight marrying the two spaces.
