Ruinous Fife mill to be restored as a split family home

New plans to turn an abandoned Fife mill into a modern dwelling have been filed, promising to breathe new life into the brownfield site near Boarhills.

Instead of delivering the approved 'statement' design, the project team have returned with a more modest proposal for Pitmilly Mill that would augment the restored structure with a detached living space, connected by a stone stair and terrace.

The site-specific approach would split living and sleeping accommodation between separate buildings, following the template laid down by prior planning approvals.

In a planning statement, AB Roger & Young Architects wrote: "The proposal involves the creation of a single dwelling using two connected volumes: the restored mill and a new-build extension. Both elements are designed to function as one dwelling and are linked by external landscaping and circulation."

Minimal interventions to the main mill will see it provide storage space with an upstairs bedroom and study. Brick infills to existing openings will be replaced by vertical timber cladding, in keeping with a new build home further up the hill.
