Edinburgh boarding school champions the arts with a compact theatre

An independent boarding school west of Edinburgh is to bolster its performing arts programme through the development of a purpose-built theatre.
Clifton Hall School in Newbridge has commissioned Nicoll Russell Studios to deliver a 153-seat auditorium adjacent to an existing standalone drama classroom.
The architects observed: "In three dimensions the veranda and the articulation of the theatre’s pitched roof above the lighting bars, steps the building’s scale down.
"Materials will be high quality and include a timber veranda and cladding, flagstone paving around the entrance and foyer, glazed timber doors to the foyer entrance and acoustic doors elsewhere, all in keeping with the setting of the Category A listed building."
Styled as a village hall, the theatre is to be set on lawns to the north of the main building, an A-listed Baronial mansion. The theatre will be accessible by a gravel path and is to be fronted by a collonaded veranda.
