Campsie cabin retreat to bring new life to a derelict barn

A derelict barn at Banks Farm, a former horse stables at Milton of Campsie, is to be transformed into tourist accommodation under plans to create a hillside cabin retreat.

The existing structure will be fully renovated and extended by S2 Architecture to reinvigorate the building. Proposals would see the barn roof raised and its stonework made good with a new south-facing extension and terrace that capitalises on elevated views with a 'cathedral window'.

Housing an open plan living space this extension would be joined by two smaller single-storey additions at either side accommodating a bedroom wing and entrance porch.

Detailing their design choices S2 wrote: "The concept retains the principals of taken precedent from the existing material palette around the site and the barn. Harmonising with a contemporary twist through natural materials accented through massing form.

"The proposed material strategy has a focus on retaining the existing stone mass to safeguard the existing heritage and distinctiveness of its context. The incorporation of glazed sections to enhance the connection between old and new as well as maximising the sunlight and greater connections to the views and vistas of the Campsie Fells."

A water storage tank will supply the property with grey water and rooftop solar panels and an air source heat pump will mitigate energy use.
