Urban Realm toasts 2024 with spirits, storms and slate

Storms and floods draw attention to our changing climate and the need to reshape our way of life to manage extreme events in the winter edition of Urban Realm.

This directly informs our report on hydropower, a domain in which Scotland has the potential to take a lead role in a new generation of small-scale projects close to the sources of need.

A similar story plays out in the surprise renaissance of Scottish slate, an industry thought lost forever could be on the cusp of an unlikely comeback. We travel to the isle of Luing to see what rekindled production would mean for the area and the knock-on benefits from shortened supply lines to repairs.

These issues rise to the fore in the latest instalment of the UR100, as practices jostle for position to be the most sustainable. We showcase the projects and practices and projects that prioritise people and the planet.

The pursuit of leisure over the holidays brings us to two Edinburgh attractions headed in opposite directions. At the National Gallery, a burrowed extension has provided expansive gallery space overlooking Princes Street Gardens, while the only way is up for Port of Leith Distillery, a towering totem to the enduring appeal of the national spirit.

Ensure you carry Urban Realm with you through 2024 to be ready for whatever the year throws at us.
