ECA campus refresh to consolidate learning

Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is to embark on a campus-wide refurbishment that will retrofit five buildings to consolidate facilities in favour of more flexible studios and workshops after obtaining planning consent.

Key moves in the Hawkins/Brown-led scheme include providing new image and sound facilities for the School of Music and fully integrating it within campus life.

Professor Juan Cruz, ECA Principal, said: "This marks a significant milestone in our journey, and we look forward to this transformative project that will not only enhance the landscape but also encourage creativity and collaboration across different fields, leading to a more innovative future for ECA."

Further moves include refurbishing an A-listed former fire station to provide workspaces for staff and digital-making facilities and a recycling hub.

Campbell Metcalfe, associate at Hawkins\Brown, added: "We have been working with our clients at Edinburgh College of Art since the early briefing stages to understand the university's strategic aims and how this translates into capital developments that will future-proof their estate.

"Our proposals are carefully crafted to make the most of existing spaces while supporting the university to create a more welcoming and inclusive campus for students."

Interventions are designed to make the college more outward-focused while improving the environmental performance of its ageing estate.
