Ayr streetscape enhancements to emphasise accessibility

South Ayrshire Council has showcased indicative designs for a series of streetscape improvements across Ayr town centre designed to improve accessibility and increase footfall.

Businesses and residents are being consulted on the plans, developed with TGP Landscape Architects, Sweco, Streets UK and Sustrans, which it is hoped will revitalise the town by banishing uneven pavements while tackling litter, empty shops, and a lack of independent retailers.

Accessible Ayr encompasses key routes around New Bridge Street, High Street and Wellington Square with enlarged pavements, newly introduced green spaces and cycleways.

Councillor Bob Pollock, economic development portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "I am delighted that these designs balance the needs of all users. Vehicles would still be able to access Ayr Town Centre as they do at the moment, however walking or wheeling in the town will be safe and a much more pleasant experience."

Public comments are invited through to 4 December.
