High-rise Irvine estate brought down to earth

The demolition of a high-rise Irvine housing estate is in full swing with a high-reach excavator concluding the process of bringing down the fifth and final block.

Afton Court's removal will conclude a year-long programme and comes with a series of road closures to mitigate risks to the public.

Councillor Tony Gurney, commented: “The end is now in sight with only Afton Court still standing. Given its proximity to a major road, it is necessary to have these road restrictions in place to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians and indeed the staff working on the demolition.

“Once the demolition is complete, we can then look forward to seeing a new beginning for the Fullarton site with the creation of modern, affordable homes for our residents.”

Demolition was first mooted in 2018 with the council grappling with soaring post-Grenfell maintenance costs - including a requirement to install sprinklers.
