Blairgowrie Leisure Centre leads a Passivhaus revolution

Construction has begun on a zero-carbon leisure centre in Blairgowrie, said to be the second Passivhaus-certified build of its type in the UK.

Blairgowrie Leisure Centre will replace existing facilities with a low-energy six-lane pool, as well as a variety of sports halls, a gym and a classroom - to be shared with Blairgowrie High School.

Designed by Holmes Miller on behalf of Perth & Kinross Council the leisure hub is being built by BAM through Hub East Central Scotland.

Yida Zhou, project architect at Holmes Miller, said: "Perth & Kinross Council have a clear vision of reaching carbon zero, and working on this project has been a brilliant opportunity to help them achieve that, through cutting-edge sustainable design."

Scheduled to complete by early 2025 the hub will feature exposed wooden beams in a departure from traditional leisure centre designs, with spaces oriented to maximise heat gain on the pool.
