Lost mills share £2.8m Heritage Lottery award

Two forgotten mills have emerged as the major beneficiaries of the latest Heritage Lottery Fund award round, sharing in grant funding of £2.8m.

Carluke Development Trust received just over £1m to turn a former mill into a heritage site, community garden and tourist hub to designs by Simpson & Brown.

This includes plans for a mill interpretation and heritage centre within a spiral structure faced in vertical timber cladding.

At the opposite end of the country a bid to resuscitate a lost mill in John O'Groats is also celebrated after close to £1.6m in funding was given to restore the B-listed industrial building to the heart of the community as a social hub and visitor attraction.

The cash infusion means work can begin later this year to realise plans by McGregorBowes to establish a gathering place for the community.
