WT set sights on Barrack Block
November 10 2008
South Queensferry’s WT Architecture has been commissioned to develop designs for the occupation of the derelict Grain Fort in Kent. The Scheduled Monument is an accretion of Napoleonic and twentieth century defences stranded on the tidal mudflats of the Medway. The designs for a Corporate or Private Retreat for hire incorporate small conference and function rooms in the Martello tower and residential accommodation in the adjacent twentieth century Barrack Block. The proposals for the gun emplacements wrap the battlements with perforated steel and glass panels, whilst new pontoons and gangways provide renewed access from the sea. English Heritage has responded positively to the proposals which could provide a future for the structure which has suffered serious deterioration in recent years.
