01 _ Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen
Surrounded by listed buildings, busy streets and mature trees, Union Terrace Gardens are one of the most centrally located city parks in Scotland. Our proposals focus on transforming the existing Victorian gardens, set within Aberdeen’s distinctive Denburn Valley, to create a new landmark contemporary park for Aberdeen. This will become a habitable green heart that optimises the connection between people, landscape and the city.
The existing valley topography and mature landscape is integral to the character of Aberdeen’s city centre. This meant the proposals dealt with the careful balance of respecting and enhancing the existing natural assets, whilst creating contemporary intervention to deliver new uses that will increase footfall, use and enjoyment of the space.
The rejuvenation of Union Terrace Gardens is recognised as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the city and integral to the delivery of another 22 projects identified within the Aberdeen City Centre Masterplan.
