06 _ Ayrshire College, Kilmarnock Campus
LDA Design is working with McLaughlin and Harvey on the creation of Ayrshire College’s new £50 million purpose built campus in Hill Street, Kilmarnock. The scheme will deliver a world-class college campus and vibrant new learning environment which is welcoming, flexible and accessible.
The College has built up strong links with the local community and the development aims to further enhance these links. LDA Design’s proposals therefore create a stimulating social and learning environment which will inspire students and the wider communities. Our proposals create a strong aesthetic concept which orders the external spaces.
The design creates a welcoming contemporary public space around the development which positively contributes to the enhancement of the local townscape and wider social and economic regeneration of Kilmarnock. The proposal also includes an allowance for the incorporation of artworks into the entrance plaza to be developed as in conjunction with a local artist which will further enhance its iconic status.
The new Campus is be designed to facilitate ‘Access for All’, providing full and inclusive access for Students, Staff, Visitors and other users. Design proposals will take cognisance of the guidelines set out in the 'Secured by Design' initiative and will provide good all round security for the buildings, grounds and car parking areas. Designed with an ethos of Sustainability, the development is BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated, utilising a refined palette of materials which are robust and sympathetic to their location and sustainably sourced.
Planting includes native species planting and areas of habitat creation which contribute to the biodiversity of the townscape. Construction work started in early summer 2014 with the new campus scheduled to be opened in 2016.
