City of Glasgow College Campus
CLIENT: Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd
LOCATION: Glasgow, Scotland
SIZE/COST: 1483m2 (15,963sqft) / £228m PHOTOGRAPHY: Keith Hunter
Michael Laird Architects and Reiach and Hall, working together in the Glasgow Learning Quarter consortium, have been selected as preferred bidder for City of Glasgow College’s new £228 million campus development project. The City of Glasgow College project involves innovative campus designs for new buildings at Cathedral Street and the Riverside, catering for around 40,000 students and 1200 members of staff.
The design focus for both buildings is on a holistic learning environment, or “learning landscape”, with potential for learning space in every corner of both campuses; some quiet and intimate and some suitable for group work and discussion. Teaching accommodation runs alongside these spaces in a continuous loop or ‘learning ribbon’ leading staff and students through a variety of specialist areas on their journey. The design builds on interest and an awareness of the whole range of the College activities, immersing users in a shared and stimulating learning environment.
This project has seen design collaboration between Michael Laird Architects and Reiach and Hall since March 2012. The consortium, led by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd includes FES, Arup Scotland, Hulley and Kirkwood, Rankin Fraser and Graven Images.
The project has won a number of awards to date including AJ100 Building of the Year - City Campus, Civic Trust Awards - Riverside Campus, RIAS - City Campus
The City Campus has been shortlisted down to the final 6 for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2017!
