West Ardhu, Dervaig, Isle of Mull
Brief - To create a workable kitchen with dining and utility space within the walls of the existing original single storey dwelling and outhouses; predating the two storey house to which they are attached. Original door and windows were retained to preserve and respect the historical shell. It was necessary to raise the roof on the outbuildings in order for these spaces to have adequate headroom but the original wall heights were maintained with glazing or timber cladding between the wall head and the new eaves level. The outbuildings wrapping around two sides of the orginal dwelling and the limited size and number of existing window openings restricted the amount of natural light reaching the heart of the kitchen and as such the continuous glazing along the ridge was introduced to brighten what was a very dark interior.
