Montrose Playhouse is licensed to thrill cinephiles

Montrose Playhouse has lifted the curtain on their new home within a converted swimming pool following conversion work by Crawford Architecture.

The red carpet will be rolled out tonight and tomorrow, giving guests a sneak preview before opening to the public on Friday with a screening of the latest film in the Bond franchise.

The registered charity, chaired by Crawford Architecture's David Paton, purchased the 1932 building from Angus Council in 2017 for £1, when volunteers helped strip the structure to its shell to permit Bancon Construction to deliver a three-screen cinema, public outreach spaces, retail and a bar.

In a statement, Bancon wrote: "The new facilities re-invigorate the town centre, will encourage an increase in tourism and support new and existing businesses by bringing much-needed footfall into the area; create a vibrant, sustainable asset to the entire community of Montrose and beyond which will utilise combined knowledge, skills and experiences to ensure that The Playhouse develops and continues to grow, bring people, community groups and businesses together to effect and realise positive change within the community of Montrose."

The complex project required the removal of a cantilevered concrete and steel diving board and digging out the basement to allow a new concrete floor to be laid over the previous pool.
