University of Strathclyde Learning & Teaching Hub opens its doors

The University of Strathclyde has taken possession of a new Learning and Teaching Building at the heart of its Rottenrow Campus following handover by BDP Glasgow.

Opting for adaptive reuse of the Colville Building and B-listed Architecture Building the team estimate that they have saved 67% of CO2 emissions associated with a new build, creating a 20,000sq/m student hub overlooking Rottenrow Gardens.

Accommodation includes a variety of learning and teaching spaces from small breakout spaces to a 400-seat lecture theatre as well as a new home for the Student Support Services and the Student Union.

BDP principal Christoph Ackermann said: “There was a clear opportunity to re-use and adapt these existing buildings to improve the quality of the University’s campus and enhance the overall student experience. The decision to transform the existing buildings rather than a new-build project also has substantial sustainable benefits."

A complex build programme saw the architect and contractor work with the University's estates services team to ensure that the campus remained fully operational throughout delivery.

Students will move into the new learning hub this September.
