Classroom annexe to rise at B-listed Marchmont school

A historic primary school next door to the former Royal Hospital for Sick Children in the Marchmont area of Edinburgh is set for significant expansion with the submission of plans for a new classroom annexe.

Sciennes Primary was earmarked for investment by the City of Edinburgh Council to address capacity constraints, appointing Holmes Miller Architects to oversee the addition.

Work will see the B-listed main building augmented by four new build classrooms in a two-storey pavilion to replace temporary accommodation currently in use as a stop-gap measure.

Designed to Passivhaus standards the classrooms will be built using stone-clad cross-laminate timber frame to all visible elevations with brick for secondary walls, all surrounded by enhanced playground space.

In a design statement, the architects observed: "The external appearance carries the concept of simplicity from the interior. The number of materials incorporated into the building envelope is kept minimal and consistent however carefully considered details add depth and texture to the design. Details are integrated into the stonework and louvres are to be fixed to most windows."

Tucked away in a rear corner the extension will be accessible directly from Millerfield Place with glazing restricted to the south, east and west elevations.
