Kier Construction has broken ground on a new primary school at Ness Castle in Inverness to cater for an influx of families drawn by recent residential construction.

Offering 12 classrooms to cater for a growing population the school is expected to open its doors next August with the option to double capacity at a future date should the need arise.

Designed by Stallan-Brand the school will sit within a newly built Barratt housing estate, employing deep-set windows within solid masonry walls to evoke a traditional castle. This will be enlivened through the use of colour and play spaces which are directly accessible from classrooms.

In a statement, the practice wrote: "The plan organisation is designed around the pupil experience, generated from a model that we have developed over the last decade, with semi-enclosed teaching spaces and a flexible ‘breakout space’."

The £14.8m school is being funded directly from the council's capital programme.
