Former Finnieston foundry in the sights of student housing developers

CW Properties and Zander Planning have held an online pre-application discussion to set out their vision for a purpose-built student housing development at Minerva Street, Finnieston.

Although no formal planning application has been filed feedback is sought on plans to demolish a former brass foundry, one of the last remaining Victorian industrial buildings in the area.

Currently in use as offices, the foundry would be swept aside to permit the construction of a new-build block at the junction with West Greenhill Place.

The L-plan structure would house 210 bedrooms over six floors wrapping around a landscaped courtyard with a rooftop deck providing further amenity.

All representations must be made by 19 March.

I'd like to see it used as some kind of veganic allotment gardens.

Pleasant little nod to the past building. Be asking to much to incorporate it?

Is this model even financially viable considering how people will adjust to how they will share their personal space after the pandemic is finally over? We need to start thinking post-pandemic and how sharing space will make people adjust their dynamics.

I think the very attractive Brass Foundry building must be incorporated into this scheme at all costs! Protection of such heritage really does matter.
The trend these days with similar sites being redeveloped is to keep the attractive and historic industrial features then construct new buildings in that context. A tall building to the east of the Foundry could be fine for student housing.
Consider for example:
The Engine Yard, Edinburgh EH7 4PD
Stead's Place, Leith, EH6 5DY
Tower Works, Leeds, LS11 5QG.

There's a really characterful area here with buildings like this and W Greenhill Place. Connections to the train, the Hydro etc this area is crying out for venues, culture, life. There's a place for housing in amongst all this too, but not at the expense of the character of this wee corner of the city.
