Specialist build-to-rent developer PLATFORM_ has obtained planning consent from the City of Edinburgh Council to go-ahead with 453 apartments at Bonnington Road Lane.

Built, let and managed in-house the properties will rise on an urban site stretching from the former Bonnington Resource Centre to a recently demolished John Lewis depot and includes a mix of flats, duplexes and studios - all with an on-site concierge and dedicated maintenance staff.

Designed by jmarchitects with Hirst and Harley Haddow 25% of available properties will be classed as affordable with a range of communal amenity spaces such as a shared lounge, roof terraces, a bike cafe, workshop and gym also provided.

A spokesperson for PLATFORM_ said: “The development will offer residents flexibility on a wide range of housing needs. The project will support the delivery of regeneration within the local area.

“Our key aim is to create quality, sustainable, and responsibly managed properties and we are looking forward to delivering this for Edinburgh.”

Complementary ground-floor retail and commercial space will also be offered for use by residents and start-up businesses. A pocket park, pedestrian priority route linking Bonnington Road Lane to Anderson Place and extensive tree planting will round out the list of interventions.

I take it children will be discouraged? Where are the family homes with a wee bit of private space? Other cities manage it. Edinburgh has in the past.

Not every development needs to be everything all the time. Suck it up and enjoy it for what it is - a good piece of work. Stop finding totally irrelevant points to complain about.

#3 - quite. You'd think we don't live in a city where large numbers of children - even (whisper it) middle class ones - are raised in flats.

If private space is important to you there are plenty of other options in the city.
