Scotland's first public Passivhaus nursery achieves accreditation

A West Lothian nursery has been declared Scotland's first local authority built public Passivhaus standard educational facility following certification.

Blackridge Early Years Centre has been delivered for £1.5m by West Lothian Council, Hub South East and Morrison Construction which meets all energy efficiency criteria set out by the Passivhaus Institute.

The energy-efficient build will serve as a testbed for its efficacy of energy use as measured against an otherwise identical non-Passivhaus nursery at St Mary's Primary, Bathgate.

Direct performance comparisons will enable the authority to determine how beneficial the energy-efficient standard is versus traditional construction standards.

Roddy Clark, Hub South East’s operation’s director, said: “As the first local authority Passivhaus educational building in the country, this is further demonstrable evidence of Hub South East’s capacity for quality, innovation and sustainability.

“We’re delighted to have assisted our client in meeting progressive Scottish Government environmental targets, as well as helping influence next-generation design proposals for Scotland’s learning estate.”

Situated within the grounds of Blackridge Primary the Passivhaus nursery has been designed by Scott Brownrigg using standardised components.

That image is of the 'softer' side, you should see the dull grey zinc-clad main entrance elevation. It's supposed to be a nursery, not an MOD building FFS!
