Plans to develop a former Giffnock care home on Fenwick Road have taken a step forward with East Renfrewshire Council recommending that consent is granted for 56 flats within the listed main building and surrounding grounds.

Eastwoodhill has lain empty since July 2008 having initially been built as a private home in the mid 1800's. Now in the possession of Westpoint Homes, the developer appointed Stallan-Brand Architects to lead its latest iteration of use.

Sitting at the centre of a 2.69-acre plot the B-listed villa will be stripped of low-quality extensions to restore the manor to its Victorian footprint before conversion to four flats. In tandem with this work, four brick 'villas' with setback zinc penthouses will rise within the grounds, each taking their cue from the main building and retaining mature trees where possible.

Explaining their approach to the new interventions Stallan-Brand wrote: "Each villa is different to respond to its aspect and position, but all fall within a similar family to create a cohesive design. By rotating and flipping the forms, the elevations become varied and rich."

Access to the development will be provided from Berryhill Road which will be widened to accommodate an increase in traffic.

East Renfrewshire Council have once again ignored the danger that increased traffic northbound on Berryhill Rd will bring to the stretch with no pavement which cannot be widened. It is dark on winter mornings (trees obscure the inadequate lighting) & school children walk along it going to St Ninians & Woodfarm Schools. Traffic moves at considerable speed, up to a blind summit.I hope that they are not waiting for a child to be injured or worse before waking up to this danger.
