Contractor breaks ground on 55 Finnieston flats

The JR Group has broken ground on 55 flats for social rent in Finnieston on behalf of Glasgow West Housing Association.

Designed by Coltart Earley the tenement-style block will occupy a gap-site at the junction of Dover Street with Argyle Street and will complete in spring 2023.

Craig Whyte, commercial director for The JR Group, said: “ This is a substantial development which includes much-needed homes for Glasgow, so it is great to deliver these on behalf of the housing association, with the aim of creating a vibrant place to live.”

Joe Heaney, GWHA’s chairperson, added: “This has been a complex and challenging development project, and we are thankful for the ongoing support of the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and our local community, in reaching this important milestone. There is overwhelming demand for social housing in our area, and we are excited about the significant contribution these high quality, energy-efficient homes will make towards our vision of shaping thriving communities.”

A revised design sees the Argyle Street elevation clad in natural sandstone and the removal of a lower ground floor and roof terrace.

The block will also be detached from a tenement gable on Dover Street to retain bin access for existing properties.

I just love the facade articulation and attention to refined details including the celebration of the corner entrance with a BT box......................

i remember when the original tenement buildings in Breadalbane st were demolished so really good to see their replacement after all these years.
Just need to demolish the old police station on the other side of Argyle St with the new tenements as proposed and this will see the successful improvement in this part of the city

Such a shame, would have been another great opportunity for allotments in that site. As we know, everyone loves allotments in Glasgow.

Have you all spotted one amazing omission from this proposal, namely architectural imagination...
