Affordable homes bring winter sunshine to Castlemilk

Mast Architects have built 42 homes for affordable rent across three sites in Castlemilk, Glasgow, on behalf of Cassiltoun Housing Association.

Built by Cruden Group the accommodation is split between the grounds of the former Castlemilk East Parish Church, as well as two nearby sites at Barlia Street and Barlia Drive, to provide a mix of apartments, cottage flats and townhouses.

Defined by projecting 'winter garden' pods attached to all homes the project provides valuable private external amenity for all residents.

Explaining what has been achieved the architects wrote: "All three sites share a common built form, with a simple palette of facing brick the primary material. As a contrast, the winter gardens adopt alternating grey and red finishes to create a striking elevational feature. These are deployed in various stacked and staggered arrangements to add further modelling within the individual blocks.

"From a landscaping perspective, a unified strategy has been developed which encompasses parking, communal landscaping and private gardens, with a new ‘legacy tree’ at Barlia Terrace to mark the completed development and the former church building."

Adhering to Housing for Varying Needs principles the development has also attained a Secure by Design 'Gold' award and incorporates photovoltaic panels to all homes.

This has a very 1991 feel about. Hopefully they have HEWI vinyl D-handles throughout.
