TGP Landscape Architects have revealed designs for an active travel route at Castlebay, Barra, to improve connectivity on the island.

Herring Walk will establish a safe pedestrian and cycle route between a proposed community campus and the islands ferry terminal by upgrading an existing path and heritage trail.

In a statement, the practice wrote: "The project is supported by Places for Everyone, an active travel programme funded by Transport Scotland managed by Sustrans which aims to create safe, attractive and healthier places by improving options for walking, wheeling and cycling and works towards environmental net-zero journey targets."

Centrepiece of the coastal route will be a new footbridge across the bay encouraging people to make the journey using their own power.

I suppose only the locals can say if they really want this or not but to an outsider it looks good. Seems strange TGP giving it an English name though, you would have thought it would be in Gaelic if it is a heritage trail, plus the tourists love all that ... I think herring walk is something like sgadan cuairt, but I`m not too sure.
