Scottish Canals have shown off an electronic footbridge and pedestrian link connecting communities on both sides of the Forth & Clyde Canal at Woodside.

The automated Garscube Bridge and Panmure Gate Link has been designed to be fully retractable, enabling continued navigation of the canal by boat while opening up access to the Claypits nature reserve, scheduled to open by spring 2021.

Sustrans director Karen McGregor said: “The Garscube Bridge and the new boardwalk open up the Claypits Nature Reserve for locals living in Queen’s Cross and Firhill. It’s more important than ever now to have space to walk, cycle, relax and exercise outdoors, and we are pleased to have been able to support this vital new link through Places for Everyone.

“The canal, nature reserve and their connection to the National Cycle Network are a gateway to the city and the surrounding area, as well as an important resource for Glasgow’s biodiversity. This is a unique project – creating a wild green space in the heart of industrial land – and we are proud to have been part of it.”

Built by McKenzie Construction the public realm improvements are a central plank of an active travel network connecting the surrounding area.

Claypits is a fantastic local initiative and this just adds to its connectivity with the city. Well done Scottish Canals.
