Milngavie High Street bolsters leisure offer

A squandered corner plot in Milngavie is to fulfill its full potential as a mixed leisure outlet for the town constituting a ground floor restaurant and upstairs gym.

Plans brought forward by Murray Russell Architects for 18 Mugdock Road will see the present underutilised site play host to a pitched roof designed to remain in-step with the High Street.

Meeting the road with a large open plan restaurant with picture windows the upper-level gym will be accessed via a covered external staircase and passenger lift.

In a design statement, the applicant wrote: "The external forms of the proposed retail unit reflect the character of the existing high street with large picture windows on the ground floor lighting the restaurant and tall, repeating vertically proportioned windows to the gym. In townscape terms, it will complete the High Street visually and extend the local shopping experience."

Adjoining public toilets will be unaffected by the proposed work.

While the proposal at least puts a social use on the site rather than parking and barrels it could have produced a building that turned the corner to look part of the fabric of the townscape. Nice to learn the public toilets will not be affected by the works when they happen.
