City of Edinburgh Council planners have unanimously approved a 230-bed student housing development at Gilmore Place which will bring a renewed lease of life to a C-listed chapel.

S1 Developments came forward with their plans for the former Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home at the beginning of the year, proposing demolition of numerous outbuildings and the erection of 29 new build cluster flats sharing communal facilities in the refurbished chapel.

The car-free courtyard development has been designed by CDA Architects to employ a sympathetic mix of stone and zinc to preserve the landscape setting. This approach is cited to have delivered a 12% increase in useable green space with an increase in the overall built footprint of just 4%.

A spokesperson for the developer said: "Redevelopment will restore the existing care-home building into high-quality student accommodation, allowing the retention of the central chapel in its existing form.

“We look forward to getting these proposals underway and to continue working with council officials and the local community to deliver them.”

That blank gable with massive zinc mansard is bogging...

Only 3 floors? The old flats nearby are 6 floors. I'd like to see this development have at least 10 floors, if not 20.
