Brodick social housing push to deliver 34 homes
The Isle of Arran has been earmarked for 34 new homes under new plans conceived by Mast Architects for a greenfield site partly occupied by an electrical substation at Brathwic Terrace, Brodick.

Led by North Ayrshire Council with Ashleigh and Hub South West the proposal has been conceived as a suburban extension to the town with homes arranged in a 'back-to-back' arrangement broken by shared surface courts perpendicular to a newly formed access road.

Challenging topography dictates that housing be built on two distinct tiers up the steeply sloping site, with all properties built to Housing for Varying Needs standards.

In an accompanying analysis of the project, the practice wrote: "The aesthetic of the proposed development is conceived to replicate a traditional rural architecture, with pitched roof gable forms accentuated on the plot elevations. The architectural theme is further emphasised through the choice of materials, with a light coloured brick used at ground level to create a 'plinth' and a robust texture at the pedestrian level.

"Cedral cladding, in a dark grey tone, is then used to express the gable roof form and is introduced throughout the site at the ground floor level to add a further layer of texture and visual interest."

The project forms part of a significant council house investment plan by the authority which is also leading a similarly scaled project in Largs.

Surely there could have been a bit more imagination with the layout of the development instead of rigid box gardens in straight rows!

They look fab. Really impressed with a lot of social housing over the past few years. Mast have been designing a few projects that look better that some private schemes.

The Anderston rejuvenation is outstanding for example.

Obviously, valley gutters don't leak in Arran - guess we'll find out.
