Case made for Dochfour church conversion
Highland Council is considering an application to convert a C-listed church in Dochfour into a single dwelling following submission of a full planning application.

The phased plan would see meeting rooms in The Old Church of Bona transformed into a living space in the first instance, presaging further work to the main hall.

Kerr AT Architects have been appointed to undertake a conservation-led approach to the building which dates back to 1846 and would retain its original timber windows, ceiling and ornate pulpit - the latter of which will be relocated and retained as a functional staircase.

Proposed changes include subdivision of the main volume while retaining a central double-height void. In a concession to modern living, the plan also includes installation of an attic sunspace extension to bring in light and views.

Located above the meeting room ceiling this would be clad in black standing seam zinc with floor to ceiling glass - all while preserving the ornate ceiling below through the use of structural steel supports.

In a supporting statement, the applicant wrote: "We hope to use our sleek, dark, sharp, reflective, external aesthetic to provide an assertive contrast to the existing stonework below."

Languishing on the Buildings at Risk register for 26 years the church is notable for its metal 'witches hat' roof vents, joinery and large leaded window lights.
