Doughnut-plan Edinburgh Airport hotel eats into accommodation shortfall
Edinburgh Airport is to play host to another new hotel under plans submitted for a 251-bed venue at the travel hub.

ICA Architects have been commissioned to deliver the Ibis Red branded hotel to the south-west of the main terminal building on the corner of Fairview and Islington Road's on land currently in use as long-stay parking.

Commenting on the challenging context the architects wrote: "The urban context, or lack thereof, of an airport site can make it challenging to develop a considered architectural approach.

"The design of the proposed Ibis Red hotel builds upon the sense of arrival and the excitement of travel, offering a stylish, contemporary alternative to today’s traveller."

The doughnut-plan hotel will afford courtyard and airport views to all rooms with active front of house spaces such as bars and restaurants filling a glazed western elevation, with full-height glazing extending to the interior courtyard.

Turning to face the south-east corner of the site a statement is made with a bold primary block to the west finished in black aluminium rain-screen cladding above a grey brick base, with contrasting white aluminium to secondary facades.

Ibis Red would complement a 200-bed aviation-themed hotel on the same stretch of road with a separate application for a standalone bar and restaurant due shortly.

Wow, what lofty ambitions the powers that be here have for our country. When one considers the majesty of the sadly lost Renfrew Airport, it really exposes the recent developments at Edinburgh Airport like this as the lackluster, meaningless piles of cheap cladding and utterly thoughtless planning that they are.

Well remember Renfrew Airport. Just to stand outside and marvel at it and what it represented lifted the spirits.

Surely the principal test of planning permission should be does the proposal lift the spirits?

More parking lost, so Edinburgh Airport can increase prices and rip us off some more!

I see no doughnut.....
Another hotel at Edinburgh Airport? Is it not worrying, all these people who come to Edinburgh but get no further than the Airport?

Given its location it won’t be much fun trying to find the place on a dark wet November evening towing the wheely case! This should all build on the exciting sense of arrival!

Is this wise in the current economic climate:
Airlines going bust and looking for state handouts. Our foreign holidays effectively cancelled until further notice. Staycations for most of us. Large hotel chains making thousands of staff redundant.
9 million UK workers currently on furlough.
Construction industry activity will commence 'gradually' according to the First Minister.
Who said the business case was viable?
Sir Ken Dodd of Knotty Ash? How tickled I am....!!

And that's before commenting on the uninspiring bland architecture. I see no doughnuts. There must be a plan (or two) missing.
