New image illustrates the scale of Glasgow’s Candleriggs transformation

Drum Property Group has released a new image illustrating the scale of the planned transformation of Glasgow’s Candleriggs as work resumes to fully clear the site.

Despite being in the middle of building Buchanan Wharf the developer has already turned its sights to the next big thing, a mixed-use masterplan prepared by Stallan-Brand Architects designed to heal an open wound in the fabric of the city.

Graeme Bone, group managing director of Drum, said: “During 2019, the company launched a significant number of projects and secured operator commitments for over 900,000 sq. ft of development in Scotland, building on the success of previous years and further enhancing our significant market share.

“This included the agreement of the first institutional build-to-rent transaction in Scotland -a hugely significant deal which should act as a catalyst for a new wave of institutional investors in the country. We look forward to continuing to build an exciting pipeline of new projects to build on this success in the coming years.”

Drum Property Group were named property company of the year at last nights Scottish Property Awards.

At last! If Glasgow is serious about increasing the population of the city centre by 40 000, it needs to move quicker than 20 years to fill in vacant city centre sites. A site needing attention is that poor excuse for a car park to the East of St Enoch Square. Either build more homes on it or build a multi storey car park or both. The ground level car park is a waste of prime site city centre space and an eyesore.

I really hope Drum can make this fly - Something needs to happen down there. This site has been as much of a blight in the city as the site of the new Barclays. I think it looks great.

This looks pretty spectacular. There are currently diggers on site and demolition of the final condemned building is underway. Further, Drum have reportedly got operators signed up for the hotel and BTR components. I'm trying not to get excited but.....i think we may *actually*, finally, see piling rigs and construction when planning approval is confirmed!

I like it but on a practical level - why is the seating all in what looks like buildings shadow whilst the sunny areas have no seating?

Sven,
The sun has a habit of moving around a bit...

David, quite bit not very useful in Scotland if a tall building is in the south and the seating is in the north of that building as it will be in eternal shade.

Well it’s a start.Good news about St Enoch Square too. There will have to be some high density builds to create enough accommodation for 40 000 more people. That and maybe re purposing some of the office space not desirable for today’s businesses. All new builds should have balconies for a bit of outdoor space and covered walkways to cope with our very wet weather. Liking some of the developments now taking place.

It is a start -- good quality filler -- hugely significant site that has been lying dormant for far too long.

Consequently get it built ASAP.

House building in Scotland is in crisis -- growing rash of high density but detached, greenfield edge developments in secondary locations offering nothing but cookie cutter design and space for the posh Golf aka the A3.

They make Bishopbriggs look good they are so poor.
