C-listed Edinburgh chapel earmarked for student housing

S1 Developments Group and CDA Architects have teamed up to deliver a new student residential development within a C-listed former chapel within Edinburgh’s Marchmont, Meadows and Bruntsfield Conservation Area.

St Joseph’s Nursing Home at Gilmore Place will be converted and extended to provide 230 beds for students at the University of Edinburgh, including three new buildings in a rear courtyard.

This process will sympathetically restore the main listed building together with the removal of later ad hoc extensions, enabling the insertion of three ‘understated’ buff stone additions framing a new courtyard around a central chapel.

Confirming their design approach CDA wrote: “To ensure the feasible redevelopment of the existing building, a couple of understated extensions are proposed to align the proposal with modern-day building standards.

“Separating the new build into three blocks breaks up a larger block form into a more ‘domestic’ scale of development for ease of maintenance and provides glimpses through to the southern boundary of the site.”

In turn, a new glass colonnade will be inserted to the rear of the main building to serve as a direct link between ground-floor amenity and the interior courtyard.

Odd gutter detail/ location...half way up a wall.
Incredibly dull but sadly typical architectural response. The existing brick buildings that this will replace are far more interesting.
