Surgical Old Town repair addresses office shortage

Edinburgh’s office shortage is to be addressed with proposals for new accommodation within the heart of the Old Town at 179 Canongate, replacing prior plans for student accommodation on the same site.

3DReid Architects were tasked with the difficult brief of creating modern office space in keeping with the heritage of the area.

Offering 20,000sq/ft of floorspace and accessible break out spaces the co-working scheme is geared towards freelancers and small businesses seeking a collaborative work environment in the heart of the city.

Incorporating the A-listed Canongate Kirk and Canongate Tolbooth the project will retain existing boundary walls, workshops and other features to maintain a character-led approach.

A spokesperson for Summix Capital said: “These proposals will not only serve to redevelop a vital location but help to tackle Edinburgh’s burgeoning crisis in available office space provision, especially in Edinburgh city centre. As a co-working space, this development provides an innovative solution to this issue while ensuring its green credentials are in line with Edinburgh City Council standards.”

A new connection from Old Tolbooth Wynd to Bowling Green Court will enhance connectivity in the area, improving links to Waverley Station and discouraging anti-social behaviour through increased through traffic.

Big improvement! The old scheme was totally overbearing - this redesign is a much better solution.
Office space / workshops makes more sense than student housing in this location too.

This looks like a good scheme; well-considered and contextually appropriate.
