Social good emphasised at Leith gasworks consultation

Sundial properties have held a public exhibition detailing their plans for the redevelopment of a former gasworks at the junction of Baltic and Constitution Street, Leith.
Detailed plans are being worked up by Michael laird Architects for a future planning application for a mixed-use development centred on postgraduate student accommodation alongside a digital co-working space, housing and shops.
Promoting the social good aspect of their scheme Sundial promise to gift 18 new build apartments adjacent to the A-listed Corn Exchange to a local charity and have vowed to support local entrepreneurs by blocking national retail chains from moving into four shop units.
These elements would be clustered around a large central courtyard with listed buildings retained and enhanced through a clear divide between old and new, sensitive infill and considered use of materials.
Spurred by ongoing tram works along Constitution Street commercial units will be oriented to front the major thoroughfare, set behind a retained and restored ground floor façade as a base for new-build flats above.
Public comment on the proposals is invited.

More infill than sensitive as it looks like there are approximately 10 m between tall linear buildings!
