Fresh housing bid made for Loanhead nursing home

A former nursing home in Loanhead has been identified for the delivery of 20 new homes by Covell Matthews Architects.

An updated planning application lodged with Midlothian Council calls for ‘conservative surgery’ to later extensions and outbuildings at Mayburn House while retaining features of the main villa, allowing two new build wings to be constructed.

New build flats will include a mix of affordable homes and properties for private sale with new build elements finished in recycled stone cladding, metal panels and smooth buff render.

Articulating their design the architects wrote: “The original villa is to be retained, and the two new wings serve to enhance the building line of the main street and return into the site to create a new residential wing overlooking the newly landscaped grounds.

Privacy of the neighbouring residential sheltered housing is respected with no windows of the new build rear wing facing the neighbouring buildings. The selective demolition will allow the reuse of existing site access which is to be widened to form allow access to a new car parking court.”

Existing masonry gate posts will be retained as part of a new stone boundary wall.
