A £20m transport upgrade for Edinburgh Airport has been confirmed to provide improved interchange experience for passengers as part of an ongoing expansion plan.

Work is expected to start on site of the new East Terminus from next summer to house a relocated taxi rank which will move from its present location at the base of a multi-storey car park to provide improved tram access.

The new layout also aims to reduce congestion by enabling taxis to bypass congestion on Eastfield Road by using a dedicated road over the old runway.  A second phase of development will create a permanent dedicated access road.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport said: “As well as making it easier for licensed taxis to drop off and pick up passengers, this multi-million-pound project will also see the construction of a new access road, helping to ease the congestion we currently see on Eastfield Road at peak times.”

Additional benefits include new covered walkways, a passenger bridge, waiting areas and self-service kiosks for taxi hire.

#1 ..they're needed for our ever-expanding population. As has been said by many, the actual solution to it all is for people to stop having (so many) kids, as each additional UK child creates 560 tonnes CO2 (7 tonnes a year). Your average family car by comparison, creates 2.4 tonnes per year.
It's easier for many to focus on plastic bags than limiting their progeny though!

Slightly off-topic, but following on from #2's comment, it's been calculated that a labrador has an ecological footprint equivalent to two 4.7-litre Toyota Land Cruisers.

Back on topic, do the (presumably electric and hybrid) taxis using this new rank really justify a £20 million expenditure? I don't see much else in these proposals beyond a new rank and some footbridges to access it.
