Moffat craft whisky distillery boosts Dark Sky Park draw

Organic Architects have brought forward plans for a craft distillery and visitor centre at Old Carlisle Road, Moffat, on behalf of Dark Sky Spirits.

Incorporating a small shop and tasting room the facility is planned for vacant land to the south of the town and will adopt an agricultural character with a feature gable providing housing distillation equipment.

Finished in black stained timber cladding and curtain wall glazing the distillery aims to broaden the appeal of Moffat as a visitor destination.

Documenting their proposals the architects wrote: “To integrate effectively with the surrounding context, the building is agricultural in character, a simple mass and roof form is proposed with a restrained material palette.  A feature gable is proposed, this helps to identify the building as a distillery, and provides sufficient height for the distilling equipment only where required.”

The 467sqm building has been designed to comply with Dumfries & Galloway Council’s dark skies strategy.

Excellent idea to provide employment, interest and entirely in keeping with what is needed to positively develop the town. In scale and style it is totally appropriate as an addition to the town.
