Central Cumbernauld cinema complex earns planning in principle

An application in principle to build an eight-screen cinema and four restaurants have been approved by North Lanarkshire Council, clearing the way for a reorientation of the town centre.

The leisure complex would rise on the site of an existing car park at the Teviot Walk Mall and includes a public entrance atrium which could play host to a relocated St Enoch’s Clock to provide a new focus for the town.

Outlining their decision the authority wrote: “The proposal accords with the relevant policies in the Local Plan and it is considered that it has been demonstrated that the proposal, in terms of traffic generation and parking provision, is acceptable in principle.”

Indicative plans drawn up by CDA and Hamcap show a split-level hall bolted onto the current shopping centre off Central Way, accessible from ground level and an existing parking deck by way of a glazed entrance.

A detailed planning application will now be prepared to finalise the design, layout and landscaping of the centre which will require further approval.

#1...

Following the demolition of the old St Enoch railway station the clock from the station was removed, and for some reason I don't know, re-homed in Cumbernauld town centre as a bit of an attraction. There has been moves to get it back for years, most recently to act as a centre piece in the new Queen Street Station.

Exciting, eh?

It was in Gregory's Girl. That makes it one of Cumbernauld's sacred relics.

The clock has been in Cumbernauld since the 1970’s And has become iconic film relic after being in Gregory’s girl as for the cinema we’ve heard about these plans for 10 years or so and by the looks of it we’ll be waiting for another 10 years, in other words don’t hold your breath

Actually sort out the dump of a centre before thinking of building anything. Freezing, damp, dirty, leaky shops, puddles, slippy floors. Maybe then some decent shoos may open instead of charity shops, nail bars etc. No doubt the cinema would end up in the same disrepair. Stop trying to veto prospects for other parts of the town.

Most people is Cumbernauld do NOT want this. There was a proposal to transform an existing retail park in Cumbernauld into a much larger retail and leisure park, it had massive support. This is largely unsupported due to the fact that the residents of the town DESPISE the town centre and its owners, the parking at the town centre is poor enough already and this will take away a full parking area and block the plans for the retail park. Typical Cumbernauld Town Center move, does nothing for the town for 30+ years but as soon as someone else wants to offer the people of Cumbernauld a better experience it's all "oh, but we we're going to do that!" Forced through against the wishes of the people. No doubt will be built and left to rot like the rest of the place.

NO! NO! NO! this was supposed to be getting built in the existing retail park next to BQ worst decision ever!! There is great potential for all these amenities up at the retail park and more than enough parking! Why would you even consider this request! But then should I be surprised!!!!! The retail park would be ideal for all the requested amenities ????

What planet r the planning Dept on. Westway retail park is a far better choice as the Town centre is an out and out shambles and there would be no chance of time for a meal before or after a film due to limited parking. Also public transport would need to be looked at as at the moment, try to get a bus after 9pm is a no no. Put this development where it was first planned and stand up to those who run part of the existing town centre. The residents of the town r quite happy with the existing plans for Westway and I feel that wld bring in people from other areas around c'nauld who do not go to the town centre due to the current problems there.

The whole area needs pulled down and redesigned, brought into modern day expectations. Yes , jobs lost for a while, businesses suffer, think long term. You can polish a turd, but it's still a turd at the end if day. As for the crapola with the clock, its has nothing but bad luck where ever it goes... ship it to Mars or give it to Hermes lol

'Agreed in principle' is not a contract to go ahead and build. This plan has been public knowledge for years. The whole picture has to be looked at (excuse the pun) before a decision is made about awarding a cinema to be built at either site. There are pros and cons. Maybe both could survive ? Adequate parking would be needed at the town centre. Adequate bus service would be needed for Westway retail park. There are so many interested parties that it makes the choice difficult. Maybe the residents of Cumbernauld should be left to decide if all the facts are presented.

Quite ironic as soon as another developer submits plans to enhance cumbernaulds leisure experience, the existing centre owners spring in to action and propose similar ideas after years of apparent neglect and running down of the existing centre. The current westway park is a white elephant with the majority of units vacant and in my opinion the site is the perfect choice and location for the proposed retail development which cumbernauld badly needs

The problem with westway retail park is the lack of bus services around this area and having only b&q a couple of bed stores not many people are there even In the weekend when you would expect it to be busy a cinema here wouldn’t make any sense, What the westway retail needs is a good bus service first then a supermarket this will help bring more people to the area, the cinema owners will want to put their cinema were there will be a good bus service and were there will be a lot of people about

Absolute joke NLC Planners need to wake up and use common sense instead of their corrupt motives backhanders to push through plans that are uneconomical and financially unviable the town centre does not have the infrastructure to support such plans, the footfall will not increase to make it profitable it will be closed within months. To take away much needed car parking leaves very little parking for the required footfall, if every screen is full and restaurants, Where will this massive amount of projected consumers park?
These plans fail on many levels. The question remains Why?
Westway is the more profitable and sustainable location it has the space for future growth, no parking issues and with improved public transport links making it accessible for all and surrounding areas, which are required to be met within the plans, it will become an asset to our town.Greed and Corruption should not be clouding common sense, the Council, Planners and Hemcap should all be investigated if the plans for the town centre are favoured over the plans for Westway. The majority of the population have responded with their views in favour of Westway very little in favour of the town centre.
