Infill family homes to put Tollcross streets ahead

Tollcross Housing Association are pressing ahead with 43 new homes at Altyre Street in Glasgow’s east end as part of efforts to increase the amount of family homes in the area.

Situated close to Tollcross International Swimming Centre and Tollcross Park the scheme will seek to reconnect the street to the surrounding area by re-establishing an urban block of active frontages.

At the heart of this approach would be a ‘square in the street’ formed by recessing the central section of each new block.

In a design and access statement the architects wrote: “The elevations have a repetitive rhythm. Areas of recessed brick add depth and create a consistent framework for a range of full-height opening widths. The asymmetric compositions are mirrored along the facade, in a manner which recalls Glasgow's classic tenement proportions and language of single windows and bays.

“The square at the centre of Altyre Street provides a focal point of the scheme, overlooking the amenity park which would be an integral part of the project.”

It is hoped work can begin early next year on the build, which combines a mix of flats and houses on both sides of the street to establish a new streetscape in an area of cleared inter-war housing.

#1 It's Page Park Architects of Morrison Street Glasgow. If you click on the UR link in the article above it will take you to the application they submitted on behalf of THA.

Interestingly it also identifies the community council ward for the site as ‘Auchenshuggle’, which I always thought was a fictional place from The Broons.
